The truck starts as a 1993 Dodge Ram with a 12V Cummins turbo diesel. The engine and transmission were completely removed. A 2001 24V block was torn down and rebuilt
from the bottom up with all new 12V components. The 1st Gen VE pump was replaced with a PDR Race P7100 pump. A custom set of PDR twins was build to fit the 89-93 engine
compartment. And finally a new DTT transmission with lockup torque converter was installed.
For other 1st Gen owners looking for performance upgrades, these upgrades can be individually done,
done in stages and in various combinations. For example PDR has several 89-93 1st Gen trucks booked in the shop for 1st Gen Twins, yet sticking with the original factory
( highly modified ) VE pump.
P-Pump Conversion
Converting this 89-93 12V from a VE pump to a P7100 pump under took several steps. First the P7100 pump was attached with new mounting hardware, the 1st Gen timing
cover gets replaced with a 12V 2nd Gen timing cover, and the pump gear added. The fuel system was also upgraded to the 2nd Gen 12V fuel system, including fuel lift
pump, fuel filter, fuel lines and tank outlet. The 2nd Gen 12V lift pump is driven by a high performance PDR 2nd Gen 12V cam. Next the fuel injection lines are replaced
with 2nd Gen 12V lines. The air intake horn is replaced with a 2nd Gen 12V air horn and matched up with custom intercooler tubes and hoses.
High Performance Engine
In addition to the P-Pump conversion, a brand new motor was built. The highlights would include a new set of high performance 12V pistons, the complete bottom
end was balanced, and a block girdle was installed. The top end was treated to a Stage 2 ported and polished 12V head, o-ringing, 60# valve springs, and a 12mm head
stud kit. The engine utilizes both 24V and 12V breather tubes.
PDR H.O. 1st Gen Twins
Of course what good is all that fuel without enough air to burn it? A set of PDR H.O. 1st Gen Twin Turbos were designed and installed. These use the PDR HX40/16 and
PDR HT3B/26 combination with the tubing and routing designed for the 89-93 body style. PDR twins utilize 2 blow off valves that are set for 65psi, use an aFe air filter,
with exhaust flowing out through a 5" down pipe.
All that air flows in through a custom intercooler with 3" inlet and outlet. The intercooler
was built to fit and also mounted a little different than normal. The AC condenser is sandwiched between the intercooler and the radiator, instead of the other way
around. The transmission cooler was also relocated for maximum air flow.
DTT Transmission
The existing transmission was replaced with completely updated transmission by DTT. This includes a 91% TC with lockup clutch, valve body, all the latest DTT internal
goodies and Billet input shaft. The valve body uses a mechanical governor and the torque converter lockup clutch is operated manually from within the cab. This allows
the truck to maintain the factory PCM and saves the work of a new wiring harness.
Switching to a new Torque Converter with lockup required a new front adapter plate. This is slightly
longer than the original non-lockup model. For this 4x4 truck it required modifications to the frame cross members, shorting the rear driveline and lengthening the
front drive line. And a starter from a 94-97 2nd Gen was installed.
